Westmeath Showcase
Thursday evening, 8pm - 10pm

Westmeath Showcase is a very unique programme, which started in April 2005. It features all local artistes from Westmeath, and surrounding areas. New artists are particularly catered for, e.g. singers, groups, storytellers, soloists etc. Established artists from Westmeath are also featured.

Live performances are regular on the show, and this has proven to be extremely popular with the listeners. There is now a waiting list of people wanting to perform on the show (about 6 weeks). We also record music sessions outside of studio, from time to time, for inclusion on the show. We often feature quizzes, mystery voices, local questions etc. as well as vox pops.

One of the highlights of the show is the local music news, where we talk about all the activities of the local musicians, e.g. news of who’s recording, new groups being formed, and also news from local recording studios. All types of music and musicians are included, from traditional to opera and anything in between.

Some background information
I started broadcasting back in 1982, and was the original creator and presenter of "Ceili Lar Tire", along with Colmain Moynihan. I’m from Mullingar, and due to a bit of bad health and laziness, I’m now semi-retired, and present ‘Westmeath Showcase’ every Thursday evening!

What are you famous for?
Well, I suppose I’m as well known as the proverbial begging ass, and I played with the show-bands back in the 60's and 70's. I play harmonica and guitar and have released 2 CDs (which just goes to show that anyone can record). Before I retired, I used to be a woodcraft instructor.

What's so special about radio, for you?
I think that radio is all about people, especially people in our community (Westmeath). Radio can be a very powerful force for good, it can enlighten, entertain, inform - in fact the list of assets radio can offer is limitless.

What do you like about Westmeath?
The people, the clean air, the craic, the music, the characters, the craic, the general feeling of goodwill. Did I mention the craic?

Anything else you care to share with us?
Just to say that it is a real pleasure to be a member of a great radio station.

Billy is well-known locally, particularly for his work with voluntary organisations and also since the launch of his own CDs in recent times.

Billy plays a wide variety of music, with the Rock 'n' Roll favourites from generations gone by, along with some of the top hits of more recent years. Always lots of great hits, so don't miss it
