High Spate of Robberies Throughout County Offaly

In a segment featured on Midlands Today; Garda Graham Kavanagh spoke to Midlands 103 reporter Michael Brophy about the high number of burglaries in County Offaly over the past weekend.

In his appeal to the public for information he said the robberies occurred on Saturday and Sunday in the early afternoon or evening from 2:30pm – 7:30pm. Garda Kavanagh explained it wasn’t unusual for burglaries to happen this early in the day as thieves take advantage of the dark evenings but it was odd they carried out the robberies during broad daylight.

He commented : “It’s unusual that it’s so early in the evening and that it’s happening in the daylight too which means they would have been seen by people in the area”.

Garda Kavanagh explained cash was the main thing taken and many properties suffered substantial criminal damage.  He then went on to give advice on how to deter criminals by using security precautions such as alarms, CCTV and strong lighting although he mentioned “if a criminal really wants to get into a property security options will not stop them, it will slow them down”.
