Then & Now – One Man’s Observations After Moving Back To The Midlands

Written 1 month ago by Angel Croitor

Ian Carroll moved to Australia at the age of 28 in 2006. He left behind his career as a microbiologist and ended up in the building trade in Australia’s capital Canberra.

“When I left Rahan we had two pubs, a shop, when you come back and its disappeared, the buildings are there but there’s nothing inside and that’s quite sad really – you read it over seas but when you come back but when you come back and see it it’s definitely a struggle.”

He felt that because of his age it was the perfect time to travel with so much time on his side. In the summer of 2018 Ian moved his new family, his wife Beth and their three children, to Rahan in County Offaly.

“In hindsight I find myself very luck to be away from that all the time – there were some dark days really.”

Ian himself now works in Tullamore but the big question we wanted to know was “what is life like now compared to back then” in the Midlands.

You can hear his full interview up above and make sure anyone else who is coming back home to Ireland gets a chance to hear it!
