Mullingar Man Loses One Third Of His Body Weight In Six Months

Written 4 weeks ago by Angel Croitor

Eugene German, a 57 year old native of Mullingar, once called himself “grossly overweight” for his height when he weighed 19 stone over a year ago. Now, after a simple suggestion from his wife, he proudly proclaims that he walks 50 kilometres per week and enjoys it to no end.

“I walk 50 kilometres a week, going back a year ago, I wouldn’t walk to the shop across the road – I’d drive.”

Eugene’s work, a cinema engineer, tended to encourage bad eating habits and a lack of exercise. When he was first diagnosed with diabetes he developed a sweet tooth, which he didn’t have before, and he began to eat all of the junk food he was told he couldn’t eat.

His partner attends Slimming World in Mullingar and suggested that he attend a few classes just on the off-chance that they worked out for his journey to weight loss and healthier habits. While he was getting a check up at home a nurse mentioned that she had known of someone before who attended the exact same classes and shed an incredible amount of weight which only encouraged Eugene even more.

So what helped Eugene out the most? It was the change of what he ate and how often. His diet consisted of high protein foods, a lot of fruit, and vegetables which Eugene states led to a “dramatic weight loss in the first two weeks” which spurred him on even more to continue on the right path.

Now here’s something that sweetens the deal – Eugene has had a pilot’s licence since he was only 17 years old. Every year he has to renew his licence which has to include any medications, illnesses, etc. that he may suffer from and for the last number of years he has had to declare that he has been suffering from diabetes and was on medication to treat it. The key word here is was. When he had to renew his licence with the Irish Aviation Authority, after starting his new healthy lifestyle, the examiner found no traces of glucose in his urine sample and it appeared that Eugene’s diabetes was non-existent.

“I didn’t jump over the moon or anything right away – when I went back to my local GP, he went through my bloods with me, and again it was the same scenario, the diabetes was gone.”

Eugene is currently weighing in at just over 12 and a half stone. That’s a stunning amount of weight to lose simply through diet and exercise – never mind the reversal of his diabetes!

It goes to show you that when you put in the work it comes back in tenfold.
