10% Hike In Property Tax Proposed In Westmeath

A hike in the local property tax could be on the cards in Westmeath.

In a report to county council members, the chief executive proposes that the basic rate for next year be increased by 10 per cent to generate extra income of €639,000.

Pat Gallagher says the move will help improve economic and tourism development, housing services, roads, libraries, environmental initiatives, community grants and amenities.

The impact on homeowners would be as follows:

Councillors in Westmeath and Offaly will meet on Monday to decide on the LPT for 2018 while the rate in Laois has already been increased by 10 per cent.
