Written 2 years ago by Newsroom
A plaque is being unveiled in Athlone this morning to remember locals associated with the 1916 Easter Rising.
Mayor John Dolan and members of the local municipal district are attending an event at McCormack Square.
The plaque will commemorate all those from the greater Athlone area who were active in The Irish Volunteers, The Irish Republican Brotherhood, The Irish Citizen Army and Cumann na mBan at the time of the Easter Rising in 1916.
Later this afternoon, councillors from Westmeath and Roscommon will attend a second ceremony in Iona where they will jointly name the Athlone by-pass bridge over the River Shannon as Cumann na mBan Bridge.
The nameplates on the bridge will be put in place at a future date when other roadworks are being carried out on the by-pass.
