Voting is now under way in the general election as polling stations across the country have opened.

More than three million people have the right to vote up until 10pm tonight.

While one seat has already been filled with the automatic election of previous Ceann Comhairle Seán Barrett, people will decide who takes the other 157 seats across the country.

Forty-four candidates are battling for 13 seats across the four constituencies of Longford-Westmeath, Laois, Offaly and Meath West.

Polling cards have been issued to all voters but they are not needed for anyone wishing to cast their vote.

People may however be asked for photographic ID such as a passport, driving licence or ID card at their local polling station.
