Over 500 People With No Bed In Midlands Prison

More than 500 prisoners have been forced to sleep on the floor of the Midlands Prison in the last 3 months.

The figures from the Department of Justice follow accusations from Independents 4 Change TD Clare Daly that prisoners are being moved from one facility to another, to try and make the numbers look better.

November 2018 was the worst month, with 260 people without a bed.

Meanwhile in January of this year, there was only a third of that figure on the ground.

Deputy Clare Daly accused the Department of Justice of tampering with the figures by moving prisoners between Cloverhill in Dublin and the Portlaoise facility.

In a statement, Justice Minister and Laois Fine Gael TD Charlie Flanagan says prison governors are required by law to take in people who have been sentenced for committing crimes.

He insists this means the Irish Priosn Service has no control over the numbers.
