Asylum Seekers Not Told If Rathdowney Accomodation Is Long Term

Asylum seekers in Rathdowney do not know how long they will remain in the town.
People from Somalia, Afghanistan, Palestine, South Africa, Nigeria and Malawi are staying at the Commercial Inn, known locally as Peadar’s Inn, while their applications are processed.
A resident has told today’s Irish Times that he’s been given no information about the duration of his stay.
The matter was recently raised at Laois County Council, where elected representatives criticised the lack of consultation in the community.
The Reception and Integration Agency claims to be prohibited from discussing local arrangements because it would identify people seeking international protection.
