Davitt Slams “Greed And Arrogance” Of Tracker Mortgage Scandal

A Westmeath Senator believes the tracker mortgage scandal is one of the most shameful examples of “greed and arrogance” in Irish history.

Fianna Fail’s Aidan Davitt is strongly criticising the Taoiseach’s actions to tackle the problem which has seen at least 13,000 customers over charged.

Banks are being put under pressure to pay compensation to those who were denied cheaper tracker rates.

Senator Davitt’s comments have drawn criticism from Fine Gael’s Jerry Buttimer:

Meanwhile, the Central Bank has revealed that it twice met senior Gardai over the tracker mortgage scandal involving 11 banks.

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, which has the power to initiate cartel investigations, has also become involved.

The Oireachtas today heard that of the 11 banks that removed trackers from customers, three have behaved satisfactorily with eight dragging their heels.
