Over 270 thousand euro of that came from the Mullingar, Portlaoise and Tullamore dictricts – with Midlands charities benefitting by €50,000.
Westmeath Support Services against Domestic Abuse, Esker House Women’s refuge, and St Lomans GAA in Mullingar are among the list.
According to the Irish Times, the Law Reform Commission had suggested the system be scrapped over 20 years ago – and for money istead to be given to victims of crime.
