Horse Racing Contributes €100 Million To Midlands Economy

Horse racing in the midlands contributes over €100 million to the local economy every year.

A report by Deloitte shows over there are 1,200 people are working in the industry.

New figures by Horse Racing Ireland show €48 mllion in direct investment to the midlands.

There are twenty stallions and over 1000 mares in Laois, Offaly and Westmeath, with 355 registered Breeders taking in €36 million in foal sales every year.

495 full-time jobs are supported by the HRI , including 27 trainers and 88 stable staff who train 200 horses.

Their training fees bring another €5 million to the region.

However, the numbers attending Kilbeggan Race Course have been falling year on year.

In 2018, over 32,000 passed through the gates compared to over 36,000 the previous year over the 8 race days.

€2  million euro been invested in the facility the last ten years.
