HSE Initiative Sees Almost 10,000 Patients Treated In North Rather Than Locally

The Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee says it makes no sense to be paying for people to travel to Northern Ireland for operations when it could be done in local hospitals.

Laois TD Sean Fleming is commenting on figures showing that 9,309 people were treated in Northern Ireland under the cross-border initiative since 2014, cost the Irish taxpayer of over €25 million.

The initiative gives people on waiting lists for procedures such as cataracts and knee or hip replacements the option to travel to any European countries.

The Fianna Fail deputy says the HSE needs to manage its finances better:
