Hundreds Of Midlands Jobs Now Safe

Hundreds of postal jobs here in the midlands now seem secure.

After years of uncertainty about the future of mail sorting centres in Athlone and Portlaoise, An Post is announcing a closure in Cork instead.

It claims Little Island is running well below capacity, meaning 240 people are losing their jobs.

An Post met staff last night to let them know the Cork centre will close on a phased basis between September and next March.

The company says the 11 million euro annual savings from the plant closure will it to invest more parcels infrastructure.

161 part-time and 79 full-time staff are to lose their jobs in over the next nine months, though some will be redeployed.

The Communications Workers’ Union says it’s extremely disappointed with the decision, saying it’s devastating news for staff.
