The Justice Minister says a drop in burglary rates shows that efforts to tackle rural crime are working.

Frances Fitzgerald’s been speaking at the National Ploughing Championships in Screggan this afternoon where she announced that funding for community alert schemes has been doubled to €350,000.

The IFA’s Rural Crime Prevention spokesperson said earlier that farmers are still living in fear, despite Garda operations to tackle burglaries.

Tánaiste Fitzgerald insists Operation Thor has worked well and will continue to do so.
