Longford & Westmeath ETB Hit By Suspected Fraud

Longford and Westmeath Education and Training Board has contacted Gardaí after losing out on almost €100,000 in a suspected fraud.

Writing in the 2016 financial statements, Chairman Frankie Keena said it relates to a third party providing training to students and a process is in place to ensure monies will be refunded.

Cllr Keena says the figure of €96,527 is based on current knowledge and may be subject to adjustment.

Tighter controls are said to have been put in place since the incident around the recording of attendance and the payment of students.

The Department of Education and Skills, SOLAS, the Office of the C&AG, the board’s internal audtiors and the audit committee have also been informed of the incident.

The ETB says all appropriate actions will be taken when the investigation is completed.
