A man in his 40s has died in a light aircraft crash in County Longford.

The crash happened at around 5:30pm this evening in Abbeyshrule Airfield just off the N55 Athlone to Granard Road.

Emergency services attended the scene and the pilot was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

He was the only person on board the aircraft.
