Gardaí are investigating a vicious attack on a farmer in Co. Offaly.

At around 2am, a number of thieves wearing balaclavas broke into the 54 year old’s farmhouse in Glassderry Beg, Brosna.

It’s understood the victim, who lives alone, was dragged downstairs and beaten with a pole before being assaulted again in his yard.

After the culprits fled with a small sum of cash, the man walked to a neighbour’s house to raise the alarm and was subsequently brought to Tullamore Hospital.

Garda crime scene investigators are at the house which has been sealed off.

It’s believed that four men were involved in the attack and that they may have spoken with Limerick accents.
