Proposals to install a statue of a Greek god in Athlone are being criticised for failing to embrace our own heritage.

As part of the town centre regeneration project, Westmeath County Council plans to erect a Greek figure, which was previously placed at the Custom House in Dublin during British colonial times.

But there are calls for a better representation of the town, with the Irish mythological goddess Sionnan being suggested as an alternative.
