Portlaoise town-centre is to get a facelift under the Historic Towns Initiative.
The Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht has awarded 160,000 euro to regenerate the area around the medieval fort.
Seven projects nationally have been awarded a total of €1 million and this was the only project in the Midlands to be selected.
Heritage Officer at Laois County Council, Catherine Casey, says it should drive more business into the town.
