Record Points Total As Thousands In Midlands Get Results

Over 3,000 Leaving cert students in the Midlands are receiving their results this morning.

A Westmeath guidance councillor says the new system which sees students get their results today and college offers on Thursday will take some stress out of the process.

Betty McLaughlin from CBS Mullingar is encouraging students not to suffer alone if they don’t achieve what they hoped for and contact their guidance councillor for advice.

She has this advice for those receiving results:

A total of 58,787 students sat the Leaving Cert throughout the country in June – which is 2,700 more than last year.

Overall, the results obtained are in line with last year.

But almost 1,600 more people got an ‘higher’ grade in Irish than in 2017.

There was also a marginal increase in the number of people who got a ‘higher’ grade in English and maths.

Other mainstream subjects such as history and geography also went up at higher and ordinary level.

But the number of people who got a higher grade in French dropped by 349, to 23,361 students.

Students can appeal their results between this Friday and Thursday, August 22nd.
