There’s been a rise in the number of people signing on in the Midlands.

The CSO’s Live Register shows the number of people without work in Laois, Offaly, Westmeath and Longford in December was just over 15,500, around 270 more than the previous month.

The seasonally adjusted figure for the country fell by 3,000, making it the lowest number since April 2008.

Nationally, just over 200,000 people signed on.
