Serious attacks on staff in the Midlands Prison have almost doubled in recent years.

New figures from the Irish Prison Service show a jump from 7 to 13 assaults since 2016.

Prison officers say increased gangland feuding, lack of staff and the use of cocaine by inmates are to blame.

Members of the new National Violence Reduction unit in Portlaoise already wear bodycams and carry batons to deter prisoners.
