The public are being urged to be wary of an increase in the theft of copper.

Crime Prevention Officer for Laois-Offaly, Sgt Graham Kavanagh, says phone lines are being removed along roadsides during dark hours in rural areas.

There has also been an upsurge in copper cylinders and piping being taken from vacant buildings.

Gardai are urging people to secure such premises, or to remove copper items from them if left vacant in the long term.

Cabling has been taken in 14 separate incidents across Laois and Offaly in recent weeks. Seven copper cylinders were also taken from vacant properties in Moorehill, Tullamore last weekend.
