Tributes are being paid to a man who’s being described as a Portlaoise “legend”.

Joe ‘Hesh’ McCormack, who served as a local councillor for many years and was elected mayor in 2002, has died aged 84.

His funeral will take place at 10am on Wednesday in St Peter and Paul’s Church in Portlaoise.

Chairperson of the Portlaoise Municipal District Mary Sweeney says he will be missed.
