Gardaí in Portlaoise are holding two men in custody after the discovery of a gun and suspected explosives.

A man in his 40s and a second in his late teens were arrested after a car was stopped and searched on the M7 near Mountrath at 6pm yesterday.

The motorway was closed for a time and army bomb disposal experts were called to the scene.

The two men arrested are being held under Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act and can be questioned for up to 72 hours.
