Two men have pleaded guilty to damaging a national monument in Offay.
They were spotted using a metal detector at the Maighlena Ringfort at Bollinarrig, Birr in December 2016.
Myhkalo Kushtanin of Corr na Meala, Hillside, Birr and Georgie Gordov with an address at Clonsilla in Dublin appeared before Tullamore District Court yesteday.
Both men are Irish citizens, but 48-year old Mr Kushtanin is a native of Ukraine, while 44-year old Mr Gordov is originally from Russia.
The court heard neither of them knew it was illegal to use a metal detector at the site, which had no sign to show its designation.
Shovels were seized when the men were found on December 11, 2016.
Their solicitor said the men described something falling from the sky before going to the ringfort to search.
An archaeologist with the National Monuments Service said the use of such devices at the site could impact what the monument could tell us about the past.
Judge Catherine Staines adjourned sentence to October 10 suggesting the defendants could make a donation to an appropriate charity.
