The use of body cameras by Gardai has moved a step closer.

The government’s backed the move at its cabinet meeting today.

Justice Minister and Laois Fine Gael TD Charlie Flanagan says evidence suggests their use will greatly improve frontline capability.

A new law will be drafted to facilitate the move.

Meanwhile, new legislation will also be prepared in relation to police powers of search, arrest and detention.
