Westmeath’s David Oliver Joyce is among six Irish boxers in action on quarter-final day at the European Olympic qualifiers in Turkey today.
Three-time European Union lightweight champion Joyce is two wins away from booking his place at Rio and goes up against Vazgen Sufaryants of Belarus later.
Ceire Smith, Katie Taylor, Christina Desmond, Brendan Irvine and Darren O’Neill are also due in the ring and all six have successfully weighed in this morning.
Portlaoise’s Michael O’Reilly suffered a shock defeat yesterday and will have just one more chance to qualify.
The European Games champion and world middleweight bronze-medalist popped his shoulder in the first round of his fight yesterday.
O’Reilly, who had been the number one seed in Turkey, will now go to the final Olympic qualifier event in Baku this summer.
