Athlone Town have been fined 1,000 Euro by the FAI for not fulfilling last Friday’s fixture against Waterford.
Waterford have also been awarded a 3-0 victory and the game between the sides on Friday August 5th has been switched from Athlone Town Stadium to the RSC with the Blues entitled to keep the entire gate from that match.
The FAI will hit Town with a further 4,000 Euro fine if the club fail to field in any other games over the next month.
Athlone’s amateur players made themselves unavailable for the fixture due to unpaid expenses.
Top scorer Marco Chindea, who was one of the four professionals on the books, has since departed the club.
An independent review is also underway into the long-term future of the club with a potential supporter led takeover still up in the air.
Athlone Town manager Alan Mathews joined Will O’Callaghan to discuss the situation at the club on last Sunday’s edition of The Inside Line
