The Republic of Ireland remain top of Group D after a hard fought 2-0 win over Gibraltar at the Aviva Stadium.

Mick McCarthy’s side were left frustrated for large periods in a below par performance for the Boys in Green but did just enough to bag a crucial win that keeps the pressure on their Qualification rivals.

Stephen Doyle reports from the Aviva Stadium.

Speaking after the game McCarthy was satisfied to have reached his pre qualifying target of 10 points ahead of their next game at home to Switzerland in September.

In the groups other game Denmark picked up their first win of the campaign with a comfortable 5-1 win over Georgia.
