The first round of the Electric Ireland Leinster Minor Football Championship was played last night and Westmeath defeated Longford by 2-8 to 0-8 at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park.

Goals from Luke Buckley and Ben McGauran in each half proved the difference between the teams.

Offaly pipped Wexford by a point in Enniscorthy.

Wexford led by 1-4 to 0-5 at half-time but a penalty converted by Cormac Delaney at the end of the third quarter proved crucial as the Faithful County won by 1-10 to 1-9.

And a point from Brian Whelan in injury time ensured that Laois earned a share of the spoils against Carlow at Carlow IT.

The sides ended up tied at 11 points each.
