Ray Connellan To Return from Australia

The Westmeath footballers could be in line for a big boost ahead of the Qualifiers after Ray Connellan announced he was leaving Aussie Rules to move back to Ireland.

The 24-year-old Athlone native made his debut for the Lake County in 2014 before joining Melbourne outfit St Kilda on a rookie AFL contract in 2016.

Despite an impressive campaign in the second tier of Aussie Rules (the Victoria Football League) Connellan was released in September. He joined Essendon’s VFL side ahead of the 2019 campaign but with a senior debut proving elusive, has now decided to bring his time in Australia to and end.

Essendon confirmed the news yesterday in a statement, explaining that Connellan had made himself unavailable for selection and opted to return home to focus on his studies.

VFL coach Dan Jordan said he would be greatly missed by the playing group and staff, but understood his decision and wished him nothing but the best.
