Two Westmeath Students Selected As Horse Racing Ireland Interns

Two students from County Westmeath have been appointed as interns as part of the Horse Racing Ireland Internship Programme, commencing a twelve-week work placement on Wednesday, June 8th. Giuseppe (Peppe) Orlandi from Mullingar has been chosen as the HRI marketing department intern, dedicated to the promotion of Longines Irish Champions Weekend and Mark Lynch from Castletown Geoghegan has been assigned to work in Navan Racecourse.

This is third year of the HRI Student Internship Programme which was launched in November 2013. Over 150 applications were received from throughout the country with 50 students shortlisted and 25 selected for interview.

Horse Racing Ireland has appointed seven interns for the summer season of 2016. Four of the student interns will work in the HRI-owned racecourses: Fairyhouse, Leopardstown, Navan and Tipperary and three will be based in the HRI head office at Ballymany, Kildare, with two in the Marketing Department and one in TOTE Ireland.

Peppe has just completed a four year degree in Commerce and Chinese in UCD. With an early background in show-jumping, Peppe gradually became more interested in horse racing and worked in local trainers’ yards and a number of studs. He also gained work experience with bloodstock agents in Newmarket. During his Erasmus exchange programme Peppe had the opportunity to visit Teo Ah King’s China Horse Club base in Wuhan China.

During his time with Horse Racing Ireland, Peppe will be dedicated to assisting with HRI’s central role in the promotion and administration of Longines Irish Champions Weekend, which takes place on September 10th and 11th at Leopardstown and the Curragh.

Mark joins Navan Racecourse, having just completed a course in Digital Marketing with Athlone Institute of Technology. He has eight years’ experience as an amateur jockey and has worked in a number of racing yards including Jim Bolger’s Coolcullen yard.

As part of his role at Navan Racecourse, Mark will be required to assist in many areas of racecourse operations such as marketing, sales, social media, website maintenance, raceday operations and the promotion of events over the summer season.
