Westmeath boxer Joe Ward looks set to leave the amateur ranks a year before year’s Olympics.
The light-heavyweight has won three European Amateur gold medals along with two silver and one bronze from the World Championship.
Ward also won gold at the 2009 World Junior and 2010 World Youth Championships before stepping up to light-heavyweight at senior level.
The Moate native didn’t go to London 2012 following a controversial qualifier defeat in Turkey and was unsucessful at the Rio Games three years ago. He was due to captain Ireland at the European Games in Minsk later this month.
