Was There A Pattern Of Fatal Mistakes At Portlaoise Hospital?
Written 6 months ago by Angel Croitor
A review by Ireland’s top maternity experts insists the failure to properly react to the heart traces of four babies did not form a wider pattern.
Led by Obstetrician Peter Boylan, the team reviewed 203 complaints over 40 years and concludes there’s no evidence that any similar failure might have been a contributory factor in the deaths of other children.
However, Will Faulkner tested the assertion with Dr Boylan on The Midlands Today Show by asking why documented cases of CTG mistakes such as babies Mark Molloy and Joshua Keyes from County Offaly were excluded.
“Those two have been subjected to several reviews, as far as I understand it, so they would not have been ones we would have come across because they would have already been dealt with.”
So what else was excluded?
The report lists very premature infants, those with foetal abnormalities, deaths where there has already been an expert review and any injuries or deaths where the States Claims Agency has completed their formal processes.
Hear what happens when Will Faulkner challenges Dr Boylan that in order to support the conclusion that no pattern of mistakes exists, the team excluded cases that amount to one. And how he admits he doesn’t know how many cases were excluded.
