Elderly Portlaoise Woman Living From Her Kitchen

Written 4 months ago by Angel Croitor

Maria Brophy will reach the tender age of 80 on her next birthday. She lives with her son, Anthony, in a two-bedroom bungalow in Portlaoise and have applied for grants and permission to build an extension. The local County Council’s advice was to move some furniture out of the house to make more space. Maria suffers from a heart condition, asthma, angina and arthritis and requires Anthony’s help to get around the house and take care of herself.

‘We’ve been living in the kitchen for the last eight years – all we’re asking is a small extension being put into the back of the kitchen so she has more space to get around’.

Anthony states that despite supplying the county council with everything the council needed to look over their applications – they haven’t been given a reason for the rejection.

Will Faulkner spoke to Anthony Brophy on Midlands Today about the struggle they’ve been through – from medical issues to living from within the kitchen for eight years. Have you got a similar story? Email us at midlandstoday@midlandsradio.fm
