The operators of ASTORA Women’s Health in Athlone are confirming their intention to wind down the business by the end of this month.
In a statement, Endo International say the decision follows a review of strategic business options, and particularly continuing legal disruptions associated with ‘mesh implants’.
56 permanent and seven temporary staff are employed at the plant on the Dublin Road, which has been operating since 2010.
President of the Midlands Gateway Chamber, Tony McCormack, says it’s bad news for the region.
Statement from Endo International plc re. the closure of its AMS facility, Athlone.
By March 31, 2016, Endo International plc will discontinue manufacturing and commercial operations of its device segment ASTORA Women’s Health, headquartered in Eden Prairie, MN .
After this time, no new ASTORA product will be produced, and no new ASTORA product will be sold. After a comprehensive review of the strategic business options – and particularly given the continuing legal disruptions associated with the mesh implants, Endo have now determined that the best strategy is to wind down this business.
This decision does not change our consistent position, supported by robust clinical data and FDA clearances, that ASTORA’s products are safe and effective and have restored the quality of life for countless women suffering from the debilitating conditions of incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. At Endo, patient health is our number one priority. As such, we have decided to expedite this closure, so that the patients and physicians who may be considering an ASTORA device for an upcoming surgery will have the opportunity to assess alternative treatment options as soon as possible.
