Job Title:                   Deli Assistant

Reports to:                Deli Manager/Chargehand, Fresh Food Manager, Store Manager, Store Owner

Main Purpose of the Job:     

Responsible for the preparation of high quality hot and cold deli products and for ensuring customer satisfaction is the number one priority. You will prepare each customer order with great pride, passion and care and inspire shoppers through your knowledge and expertise of our fresh food offering.  Your priority will be to demonstrate your passion for quality food, manage queues and maintain the highest standards in hygiene and food safety ensuring each customer receives an exceptional customer experience.

Relevant Skills/Experience:

  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Previous customer service experience is advantageous;
  • The ability to work as part of a team in a fast-paced environment, ability to multi task under pressure;
  • A passion for food and the ability to inspire shoppers;
  • HACCP training is beneficial but not essential.

Main Duties:

  1. Always ensure that customer satisfaction is the number one priority by greeting each customer as if it’s their first visit to the store and consistently deliver an exceptional service by displaying I-CARE service excellence behaviours;
  2. Actively promote the Real rewards Loyalty Programme to every customer by:
  • understanding and explaining features, benefits & advantages to customers & colleagues,
  • ensuring you are up to date on active vouchers, the APP and any changes to the loyalty programme; 
  1. Prepare customer orders across all fresh food areas i.e. make sandwiches and rolls, dish up hot food, slice meats and cheeses using the store’s portion control measures;
  2. Price all items accurately using the scales correctly;
  3. Ensure that the counter displays across all fresh food departments are kept to the highest standards at all times throughout the day. Cook, prepare and display the foods sold throughout the day;
  4. Demonstrate your passion for quality food by sharing knowledge, recipes and personal recommendations with shoppers;
  5. Taste the products, as direct by the Store Owner/Manager or Deli Manager/Chargehand, so you can confidently engage with customers on the products;
  6. Keep up to date with changes in the range; ensure you have tasted the products so you can confidently engage with customers;
  7. Check and maintain the self-serve units and the coffee area;
  8. Operate all equipment carefully and safely;
  9. Deal with all customer queries and complaints politely, professionally and in line with store policy; Report back to the Fresh Food Manager any customer comments, opinions and feedback;
  10. Keep up to date with key promotions so you can share these with customers where relevant;
  11. Prepare prepacked foods, package, weigh and price products and ensure displays are kept to the highest standards with products faced off and date rotation;
  12. Use your initiative to identify new opportunities or ways to improve the department/drive sales;
  13. Always wear full uniform, name badge, hairnet, safety shoes and display a neat appearance at all times;
  14. Adhere to Food Safety and quality guidelines at all times and ensure all aspects of food preparation, merchandising and cleaning are in line with HACCP guidelines;
  15. Complete daily and weekly HACCP records;
  16. Work towards achieving Emerald status in EIQA;
  17. Work towards achieving Service Excellence in the Mystery Shop reports;
  18. Ensure waste is managed in accordance with store policy e.g. monitor daily consumption and plan;
  19. Attend and complete any employee training as requested by management;
  20. Be familiar and comply with all Health & Safety Regulations particularly those directly relating to your role and to report any breaches to store management;
  21. Adhere to all Store policies and procedures at all times;

  23. Perform any other duties or assume any other responsibilities that may be assigned to you from time to time. These may be outside of your normal area of work. Furthermore, you may be assigned to work in other areas within the Store on either a temporary or permanent basis.
