Animal shelters around the country will see an influx of pets in January and February, as families return or abandon their Christmas animals.

Pets aren't just a whim for the holidays, but a commitment for a long period.

That's the reminder from Laois SPCA, which is advising people to seriously think before getting a dog or a cat for Christmas.

January and February are common months for people to begin returning and abandoning animals they got as gifts.
