Episode 12 - 22nd March

Country Life with MJ Clery

Friday, 24 March 2023 - 45 minutes

This week MJ chats to Brendan Golden from the IFA on the newly announced Suckler Cow Scheme (SCEP) which sees a payment of up to €150 per cow for the first 22 cows. Lorcan Roche Kelly from the Irish Farmers Journal speaks about the global economy including the decline in milk prices and why we are unlikely to see any drop in fertiliser prices this spring. Keith Fahy from Teagasc recently carried out a very interesting experiment where he butchered a Hereford heifer for the deep freeze. The amount of actual edible meat on the ground was between 25% and 30% of the animal's live weight which made for interesting findings. Michael Guinan from the ICMSA calls on Minister Eamon Ryan to stop making excuses and meet the people of the Midlands to speak openly and transparently about bog rewetting.
