On the programme this week MJ chats to the newly appointed Fine Gael spokesperson on Agriculture, Cork based Senator Tim O Donovan. Tim is a dairy farmer and he shares his views on how he feels about the upcoming EPA report on water quality and the impact this will have on our nitrates derogation. Tim feels that this is one of the biggest challenges farmers have faced in years.
Alice Doyle speaks about how the IFA are looking to have pre-nuptial agreements recognised in Ireland. Alice feels that the landscape has changed completely, people are getting married older with significant individual assets to their names and there needs to be a procedure in place where these assets can be agreed upon prior to marriage.
Christy Watson from the Irish Grassland Association speaks about the history of the organisation since it's inception in 1946 and an upcoming farm walk in Clonbullogue, Co. Offaly.
The Department of Agriculture has just announced a nationwide genomics test for all stock from 2024 and Jimmy Cosgrave from the ICSA illustrates how understanding the genetic make up of dairy beef cattle will be a gamechanger for beef farmers into the future. This is something that is badly needed and it is an extremely positive step for the future of beef farming.
