Episode 30
Country Life with MJ Clery
Saturday, 29 July 2023 - 44 minutes
On the programme this week MJ looks at the interim Teagasc farm income figures for 2023 which shows dairy income on farms projected to be down 50% on 2022. A drop from over €140,000 to €70,000. Dairy is still head and shoulders above its nearest competitor which is tillage at an income of €36,000 this year again a significant drop on last year.
Adam Woods from the Irish Farmers Journal speaks about the latest figures which shows that suckler numbers need to drop by 29% to meet our 2030 targets all the while dairy numbers are seen to increase by 8%, figures which Adam feels are grossly unfair for suckler farmers.
Cathal Nolan from Ireland's Weather Channel speaks about our current rain pattern and how we can cross our fingers for some good weather in August.
Kieran McEvoy Grain Chairman from the IFA speaks about how tillage farmers are coping with the rain and how the shallow cultivation timeline needs to be extended given the conditions.
Pat Murphy speaks about the Shannon Callows and how farmers in this region are being impacted as a result of high water levels in the river.
