Episode 6

Country Life with MJ Clery

Thursday, 8 February 2024 - 47 minutes

On the programme this week the land market is top of the agenda. Joe Coogan Auctioneer chats about a block of land in Co. Laois leased for €560 per acre recently which shows real strength in the market considering how tough 2023 was financially. The topic of the vacant/derelict housing grants and how they are creating a lot more interest in rural dwellings is also spoken about. Karol Duigenan from the FTMTA chats about their upcoming conference entitlted "Navigating the Machinery Landscape" taking place in Portlaoise. With the tillage sector after taking a hard hit in 2023 it has seen a big knock on effect in machinery/tractor sales and this is one of the main areas of focus at the event. Willie Dunne from slurrybags.ie which is an Offaly based company chats about how recent changes to the reclamation of VAT by non registered farmers is having an adverse effect on his business. The changes are short sighted and show a lack of joined up thinking by stopping farmers from spending on hugely important areas such as slurry storage. Phelim O Neill from the Irish Farmers Journal chats about ongoing farmer protests throughout Europe and while they are not linked, unrest among farmers is at an all time high on the continent.
