Cats could be banned from roaming the streets in one part of Western Australia, unless they're on a lead.

Planned changes to laws in the city of Freemantle, would mean felines are not allowed in any council-owned areas, including roads, verges and bushlands.

The aim is to protect wildlife and remove the risk of cats being hit by cars.
