Calls Made For More Facilities For Young People In Laois

Cllr Aisling Moran says teenagers and young adults need more choice when it comes to amenities.

A Laois County Councillor is calling for more facilities and services for young people.

Cllr Aisling Moran says teenagers and young adults need more choice when it comes to amenities and services available to them.

The Independent representative highlighted the strong emphasises put on football as wells as sports clubs and activities.

Yet there are many teenagers and young people across the country who take interest in alternative hobbies.

As the Laois councillor pointed out diverse amenities and facilities are needed to encourage hobbies such as robotics, chess, drama and much more.It comes as plans to deliver a hundred euro culture card for 16 year olds look set to be shelved in next week's budget.

The digital payment method would have been worth one hundred euro for each teen and could have been spent in cultural spaces such as the cinema, concerts and other forms of art and cultural environments.

The roughly €8 million intiative is unlikely to proceed as currently comprised for at least another year after the Expenditure Minister Jack Chambe's intervention.

Ms Moran reckons culture cards do not support the future of facilities available to teenagers and young adults.

She says youth clubs and a wider range of amenities should be prioritised in future investment:
