A midlands TD believes the proposal would incentivise people to work.
The Government is being urged to introduce a "points-based system" for the allocation of local authority homes.
Typically, houses are allocated based on how long a potential tenant is on a waiting list, and the composition of their family.
However, Longford Westmeath TD Robert Troy says his proposal will incentivise people to work, with points introduced for being in employment and illness, as well as the length of time on the list.
