Nationally, over 2,500 commencement notices were received.
Construction began on over 150 new homes in the midlands last month.
Figures from the Department of Housing show that's an increase of over 40 on the figures from March.
Westmeath County Council received the highest number of commencement notices in the region in April, at 64 - less than half the number compared to the month prior.
Offaly's commencements jumped to 48, up significantly from 11, and the notices in Laois increased from 24 to 45.
Construction on over 2,500 residential units got underway around the country last month.
