16,428 more people have tested positive for Covid-19 -- the highest number ever seen in the Republic. 

The Chief Medical Officer says "every individual should consider themselves potentially infectious" in light of the very high levels of transmission of the Omicron strain. 

Dr Tony Holohan has urged people to avoid crowded shops -- saying it should be considered a "hihg-risk activity". 

The HSE says self-referral slots for PCR testing "may book out" due to the rise in Covid-19 cases.
