As many as 10 classes are coming on stream.
10 additional autism classes are due to be brought on stream in Laois schools next year.
The Department of Education says Scoil Chroist Rí in Portlaoise will be allocated two new classes, while a number of schools will receive one new class, including Colaiste Íosagáin in Portarlington and Arles National School.
The units are due to be brought on stream for the 2024/2025 school year.
Laois Offaly Sinn Féin TD Brian Stanley says he welcomes the progress:
"The importance of providing these additional classes cannot be overstated, as it is a well-established fact that intervention at the early stages of development and learning is crucial in terms of the lifelong experiences of children with autism.
Special Education classes, and facilities for children with autism are a priority for myself and Sinn Féin.
I will continue to push for further progress to meet the special educational needs of the children in Laois."
